Kept by the Dreaded

The Grimoire

This book was not written by the Draugr. He does not explain himself. What follows was pieced together by the Dreaded, from the marks he leaves behind.

Who He Is

The Draugr is not a host. He is the thing the stories are about, a Norse undead that feeds on remembered terror. Every true nightmare retold keeps him fed. Every stitch, every duet, every sleepless viewer makes him stronger.

He does not chase the dark. He is the dark, rented a voice.

The Mark

The joined bind-rune mark

In every episode, the Draugr hides a small bind-rune in a single scene, the joined bind-rune, dagaz joined with raidho: “the day’s journey.” It might be carved in a doorframe, scratched in frost on glass, or burned into bark, and it never hides in the same place twice. No one ever mentions it, not in the narration, not in the captions, not in the comments.

If you find it, the Draugr’s only reply is ever:

“You see more than most. Keep looking.”

Marks confirmed so far by the Dreaded:

EpisodeWhere the mark hides
27: The Ghost They INVENTEDScratched on the séance tabletop, beside a pale handprint
28: The Black Monk of PontefractScratched into the stairwell wallpaper
20: The Tent Was Slashed (remaster)Scratched on the tent canvas
17: The Ghost Who Testified (remaster)Scratched in frost on the bedroom window

The Whisper

In the quiet moments, buried deep in the sound bed where almost no one listens, something whispers. It is reversed. It is never subtitled. It has never changed.

Slowed down and turned around, the Dreaded swear it says the same three words, every time:

“I was there.”

The Easter Eggs

Separate from the mark, each episode buries one pale apparition, a face, a handprint, a figure, visible for half a second if you are watching closely. Or if it wants you to see it.

EpisodeWhat glimpses back
14: The Bed in Room 6 (remaster)A pale face flashing through the window blinds
15: The Polaroid (remaster)A pale face surfacing inside the developing photo
17: The Ghost Who Testified (remaster)A pale handprint pressed on the window glass
20: The Tent Was Slashed (remaster)A pale face in the blizzard fog between the trees
27: The Ghost They INVENTEDA pale handprint beside the rune on the séance table
28: The Black Monk of PontefractA pale ghost face materializing in a dark doorway

One rule of the canon, from the Draugr himself, such as he is: he never lies about the stories. About himself… that is another matter. Keep looking.
